The O.C.

Well, the week at home was....interesting, I guess. I mostly spent the entire time avoiding my mother and trying to avoid conflict. There was a big discussion between us that pretty much left me hating it there, and wishing to go home. The only consolation was that my grandparents were there to save me and take me on a loooong drive with them. Up to Rhode Island. In their sweet 68 Chrystler. It's like 18 feet long. But it reeked of moth balls, and after the ride, I did too. By the end of the week things were OK, and my mom and brother actually stayed in our apartment in Milwaukee on their drive out to Montana, where my bro will be working for the summer. Graduation was good. I got some really great pictures that I'll have to post when I get a chance. I'm currently in Newport Beach, CA, with the entire Callister family. It's almost noon, and have I seen the sun yet? No. It's so lame, these California beaches. You have to wait for the fog and smog to "burn off" before you can actually go the beach. We don't have that problem in Florida!!

Friday was probably the longest day of my life. We got up at 330am to take my aunt and uncle to the Hartford airport, then mom and dad drove me to New Haven so I could catch the train to NYC, where I got off in Harlem then caught a bus to La Guardia. Landed in Milwaukee at 1230pm, then LEFT Milwaukee for LA at 7pm. After a layover in Denver and a flight on Frontier, which, if I may say, have the crappiest seats EVER, we finally made it home in LA at 3am. A full 24 hour day of nothing but travel. By plane, train, and automobile.

So here I am at the Newport Beach Public Library b/c my laptop isn't picking up any wireless networks. It's all good tho, because there's only so much family I can take at a time. I ran down the boardwalk this morning, so at least I'm doing something productive. Hopefully by the time I get back to the beach house the sun will be out.

But I seriously doubt it.

"Home, Sweet Home"

It seems like New York was forever ago, but I just left yesterday morning. Derrick left earlier than I did, which was very sad. I feel bad for him, because I think the time will go by faster for me than for him. I'll be with family and doing stuff, and he'll just be home alone. Poor guy. I think he'll be playing tennis and golf with his buddies so hopefully that will help time go by fast for him.

So yesterday I took the train up to New Haven and my dad and bro and uncle picked me up. Got home, ate dinner, then I crashed for a couple hours. I was sooo sleepy. We watched some movies and just sat around really. Dad took me out in the Model A for a ride. It's been fun to hang out with my aunt and uncle. They're pretty fun as far as relatives go. Things are going OK with my mom. She helped me with my skirt, which is turning out to be a disaster. I'm just going to bag it and try something else. She did find a sewing machine for me so that's cool. How I'm going to get it home is another issue...

Didn't do anything today. Had lunch with dad at the Academy. Man, there are soo many good looking guys there. It doesn't hurt that they're all in uniforms either.... :)

Now it's 1130, but really 1030 to me, and I'm not really tired. But everyone got kicked out to bed b/c Morgan's sleeping in the living room and he has a final tomorrow. Luckily they have wireless and a laptop so I have at least something to do.

Tomorrow my grandma and gramps come in, so things are sure to only get more hectic around here. Oh, and check this out: I guess Morgan only gets 4 tickets to graduation, so right now as it stands mom and dad and the grandparents are going. Isn't that just fan-freaking-tastic. Again, something else that could have been brought to my attention before I bought a ticket to come out. What the hell is up with my family lately?

Yesterday was Father's Day, which was cool b/c I think the last time I was home for it was in 1999. So my dad was happy. He's a good guy, but I think he feels underappreciated. My mom works him to death--he never gets just a minute to relax. Granted, he likes to keep busy, but like tonite after dinner, we were all just sitting around the table talking and she made him go and do something, and we're all still sitting there. I mean, let the guy digest! He wants to chat too! I feel bad for him.

Well, I gotta pee. I've been waiting for a bathroom for awhile, so I better snag one while I have the chance.

Lata.

My feet hurt.

Holy moly, I think my feet are going to fall off.

Yesterday was the acutal wedding. The ceremony in the temple was really nice. Erica looked soooo beautiful. Her dress was gorgeous, too. Their pictures are going to be awesome.

In between the ceremony and the reception we wandered around town, heading down to Greenwich and SoHo. In our dress clothes. Big mistake. Heels and touristing=blisters.

We took a bus to the reception in the Bronx, which took an hour, so I got to rest my feetsies a little bit. You're in practically the ghetto and then BAM! you're at this gorgeous reception center. There was a ring ceremony first, which was beautiful. The flowers were absolutely gorgeous. After the ring ceremony was a cocktail hour, and this gigantic buffet line, including a pasta bar and carved turkey and ham. We were thinking that this was the reception. Everything was delicious. But was that it? Nooooo. There was a dinner afterwards! The hall was beautiful, there was a huge marble dancefloor, and at every seat was a fruit salad in a half-pineapple bowl. There were so many Italians there, it was ridiculous. So then there was salad, and then a lemon sorbet palate cleanser in a frozen lemon. We danced the whole night, in between all the courses. It was really fun. Then dinner was served--ribeye, salmon, or chicken. Yum! More dancing, and then they cut the cake, which was actually really good too. Then more dancing, and then the wedding singer (yes, wedding singer! who was awesome!) announced a surprise. The servers rolled out dessert. A table with a chocolate fountain, a table with crepes, coffee, and an ice cream cooler filled with ice cream sandwiches and push pops and klondike bars and all sorts of ice creams. It was incredible. So then we were told to sit down, that there was more to come. Out come 6 or 7 more tables that they arranged in a half circle--all loaded with tons of desserts. Cheesecakes, pastries, fruit, ice sculptures. It was unbelievable, and probably the most extravagant wedding I have ever attended in my life. It was super fun, and the perfect celebration for Jason and Erica. They are the perfect couple, MFEO. (For you non Sleepless In Seattle watchers, that means Made For Each Other)

Today we got up early and waited in line for Student Rush tickets to see Tarzan. We were second in line, so we ended up getting some. Front row, center tickets for $20! Nice! Of course, we had to wait 3 hours to get the tickets, but hey! $20! The show was really good, lots of swinging around and high up stuff, which may have been better looking from farther up, but oh well. The music was great, and Tarzan was freaking HOT. His bio said he made it to the finals of American Idol, but I don't recognize him.

After the show we headed down to Wall Street to look for the Joseph Smith statue but it was gone. I guess the last day was today...just our luck! Then we walked down to Battery Park and took the train back up to Midtown to find someplace to eat. We had heard Tao was really good so we headed there. We walked in and they said they didn't have any open tables for the night, and we felt underdressed so we left. So we walked around and around and around looking for somewhere to eat. Well, we finally ended up at McDonald's. Ha. We went from Tao to McDonald's. How about that for a downgrade??

Now we are exhausted, and delaying the fact that we have to pack it up and get ready to part ways tomorrow. Derrick heads back to Milwaukee and I'm going to CT for Morgan's graduation. We'll see how I last for a week with my family. 8 people in one house with one bathroom? Yikes.

Blogger is being goofy right now or I'd upload more pics. I guess one's the limit tonite. More later, perhaps.

Need. Sleep.

New York certainly isn't short on the number of wackos here. We saw (and captured on film) numerous characters yesterday at the Yankee Game. Here's a picture of 2....

After the game we walked around a bit, then got ready for the dinner. Yummy Italian food. Then we walked up to Rockefeller Center and took some pictures and just hung out with our friends from Utah. It's been fun seeing everyone again. Now we're headed to the temple for the wedding!

More later!

I want to be a part of it...

NEW YORK, NEW YORK!!!

Well, our trip started out a little shaky. We get to the airport, check in, everything A-Ok so far. We walk to our gate, pass the monitors on the way and our flight is on time. Yay! We walk BACK to grab some dinner, and the monitor now says DELAYED!!! What??? In 30 seconds?? The good thing is that it was only delayed 25 minutes. Now, everytime we fly, we get pepperoni pizza from Pizza Hut. I mean, Pizza Hut=Vacation to us. Well, they are renovating, and Pizza Hut is GONE. In its place is Uno, which I was happy to see, as I have had their pizza in the past. So, we grab a pepperoni. NASTY. I could barely swallow it. So disappointing. My fabulous trip is getting a rough start.

But we made it, and hopped on a bus, and then a subway, and then walked to our hotel. And now we're here! Everyone has been super nice to us. Especially helping us with our huge suitcases on the bus and through the turnstyles. Whoever said New Yorkers were unfriendly must have been here on a bad day.

This is us in the middle of Times Square, you can kinda see our luggage at the bottom. I was just taking a pic of Derrick, and some guy offered to take one with both of us. See?? Nice!!

Gotta love free wireless at the ole' Holiday Inn Express. I'm sure I'll be keeping you posted with our weekends events!

License plate sighting of the day: When Jesus said "love thy enemies", I'm pretty sure he meant "don't kill them".

I laughed when I read it. Kinda true tho, if we all just got along, things would be way better!

Today I had lunch with my friends Janice and Sabahat--the ones who stood me up last night. I, of course, gave them the guilt trip. We went to our old lunching spot, Singha Thai, which in my opinion has the best Thai food in Milwaukee. Sab is prego, due in 6 weeks. She is one my bestest friends here in Milwaukee--we met at HK, and then she left me for another job. And Janice is probably two and a half times my age but a great friend too. We shared a quad cube. She's hilarious.

And since I was down that way, I headed to the mall after lunch. And what's at the mall?? H&M!! So I got some more stuff. Sigh. So therapeutic. Oh, and went to the other and got some cute tan wedges. I don't really have anything that goes with them, but I'm sure I can pull something together.

Now I'm all packed and ready to go. Well, minus the stuff I need to get ready tomorrow. Linds is taking us to the airport and in less than 24 hours I'll be sleeping in the middle of Times Square! Well, I'll at least be there...maybe not sleeping yet. Cities get me so excited. I'd much rather visit a city than camp or hike or whatever it is hippy-granolas do. I'll take skyscrapers over mountains anyday of the week. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate nature. But I don't feel the need to constantly "be at one" with it.

So, we've done the big stuff in NYC, and last year we did all the little stuff we wanted to do. Any suggestions on what to do this trip? Favorite deli, shop, show? Lemme know!

FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!

So today was the last day of my temp job. I tried to stretch it as long as I could. 3 days was the max I could stretch and still be an ethical person. It worked out perfect--I hope they call me again to do it. After work, I went to the Grand Avenue Mall downtown since I had time to burn before I met Janice and Tina for dinner at La Fuente. I went to Old Navy and got tons of stuff. Shorts, shirts, perfect summer stuff. Got a pair of shoes. Shopping makes me happy! And get this!!! I'm walking through the food court, and what do I happen to see???? A PANDA EXPRESS!!! Are you kidding me?? Have you been there this whole time, my beloved Orange Chicken?? Unbelieveable. Almost 2 years, and you've been 10 miles away from me. And here I was making the trek all the way to the Illinois Oasis for it. So HOORAY!! Happy day!

Anyway, I head to La Fuente and I sit in the bar waiting for my friends. 10 minutes. 20. 30.....Uh...it was today, right? I don't have their cell numbers, so I call home and have Derrick check my email. Tina emailed and cancelled b/c she's sick. Nice. I got stood up! Sorta. But, hey, I figure, Panda Express!! So back I go, only to find that they are OUT of orange chicken, and closing soon so no more will be made. Eating is just not in my cards today.

2 days till my vacation starts!!! I'm so excited I could just pee myself....

I win!

Last night I learned some shocking information. We were saying goodbye to friends that were moving away, when another friend mentioned that Jaleel White committed suicide! Double sadness! Supposedly he left a note that said, "Did I do that?". You know, the phrase he always said on Family Matters? How terrible!

Well, this morning before I left for work, I Blingo'd "Jaleel White" to see if it was true. And to my surprise and happiness, I WON!!!! That's twice now! I, of course, opted fot the iTunes gift card over the movie ticket. Tell me again why you AREN'T using blingo for all your searches???? Install the Blingo toolbar, and use it. Hooray! What a great day! And it wasn't even 7:30 yet!

So my temp job is at a health insurance agency. All calls coming in regarding claims and benefits get recorded, first on the hard drives, then archived to tapes. My task, should I choose to accept it, (and I did), was to look up a list of calls regarding a certain case for litigatiion purposes. Like Cher did in Clueless, which is one of my all-time favorites. There is no better teen movie that came out of the 90s, in my opinion. If fact, I am tempted to watch it now...

So anyway, I had to research which tape it was on, then find the tape and load it, then listen to the conversation to see that it matched, based on policy number confirmations, and save it to the network. It takes these tapes forever to load, so I have lots of downtime. So today, I brought Ike and my knitting, and went to town. Niiiice. Getting paid to knit is the best!

I am currently watching the Fuse channel, and Pants Off Dance Off. Here's what the show info says: "Shredding their clothes down to their skivvies while dancing to popular music videos for the chance to win bragging rights and some hard earned cash." It's hilarious. Average people stripping, to a green screen prolly, while the music video plays in the background. They never show anything, but it's still entertaining.

Still...I think I'd rather watch Clueless...

Happy Hump Day!

So yesterday was 06-06-06, "Satan's Birthday", they called it. And while I am strictly Christian and God-fearing, this totally made me laugh.

It's a doctored picture of my friend Carl, who, as it turns out, is an atheist. Perfect.

It wasn't a completely hellacious day, as I got called about a job. Thru the temp agency. Today it was made official, and I start tomorrow at 9am. I think it's data entry, but it pays well, and it's a week long stint, which is perfect, since I leave in a week for NYC! Yay! So, I guess the vacay's over. Good thing I got 3 good days in at the pool this week!

Not sure if I mentioned this or not, but my friend Lindsey who is getting married asked me to be a bridesmaid! How exciting!! It's still a year and a half away....but still! How fun! She asked our other friends Lindsay and Rebecca, too, so we're all pretty stoked about it.

Well, I should get some sleep. Can't look like a zombie on my first day of work!!

More pictures!

I finally uploaded the pics from Riversplash. Here we are waiting for the fireworks:

This is from the wedding last night. Kristin was the cutest bride. It was the perfect day for her. The other girl is Amy, Derrick's trainer.

This is us today. We went and found this beautiful park/"beach" down by the lake. Beautiful blue skies, nice breeze. I realized I've lived here long enough when I saw someone I knew there. In the most random place. A guy I had clinicals with and his girlfriend. I think Derrick's head loook bulbous in this picture. Don't tell him I said that.

I shall now proceed to step upon my soapbox.

Ahem.

Dear Ladies of Wisconsin,

While I myself do not consider myself a fashionista in the least, I feel I do know a little something about what looks good, and what does not. I can put together a decent outfit, I can accessorize, and I certainly know that shoes can make or break the ensemble. Summer is the perfect time to buy and wear new, cute, strappy sandals. A time to show off those toes that have been hiding all winter. Toes carefully painted in the bright summer colors that we love. However, my dear friends, young and old alike, (and it is the young that pain me the most---you should know better!) summer is NOT the time to wear Suntan Pantyhose with said sandals. Or even worse, Nude Pantyhose. In fact, if any part of the toes are showing through your shoes, pantyhose should be strictly banned. Don't even think about reaching in that sock drawer. Pantyhose completely ruin an otherwise darling outfit, and negate any cuteness sandals may have brought to the party. I'm not entirely sure where the notion came from that sandals and pantyhose go together. Perhaps from mothers saying that only hookers go out with bare legs. Well, sister, times have changed. As long as you're clean-shaven, bare it away. Now, I have seen hose that are toe-less. While you may think that these are a suitable alternative, let me assure you, they are not. Having toes 4 shades lighter than the rest of your leg only makes you look creepy. Trust me, you don't need pantyhose!!!

I mean, look at this picture. You can't honestly tell me that you think the foot on the left looks better. UGH! Seriously! It looks like a mutant foot!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

While Wisconsin is a huge offender of this hideous, (and if it were my way, unforgivable) crime, I'm sure there are others in our great country practicing this act. While it may be a free country, you are breaking all sorts of fashion rules. So please, do away with the seam across your toes and toss the hose. Use them to cover your face when you rob a bank, use them for starting fires, just use them for something else besides wearing them with sandals.

Respectfully,
Karen

We went to a wedding today. I love weddings. It was a girl Derrick worked with at Kohl's, but she quit and works downtown now. Anyway, she had like 9 girls in her line...it was insane!! The reception was out in BFE Wisconsin. Oukachee or something like that. It was a pretty nice place, tho. One cool thing they did was a married couples dance. Only married people could dance, and you stayed out depending on how long you've been married. The longer you've been married, the longer you get to dance. The couple out the longest had been married 57 years!! Holy crap! That's a long time!!

I went into a temp agency downtown yesterday and took their tests. I know a couple girls that went thru the same agency and said they got work pretty fast, so hopefully I'll hear something Monday.

Yesterday Lindsey, Rebecca and I went out on Rebecca's parent's boat. Beautiful weather. Perfect day. Chilly out on the lake, but still nice.

Later that night we went downtown for Riversplash. We ate at Mader's, this German restaurant. Mmmmm. I love me some German food. Then we just walked around and made fun of the drunk people, and watched the fireworks. OH! And I got a cream puff! YUM!!!! Soooo good. But it only made me anxious for the fair even more!

Sleepy....nite!
