Turkey!

Well, I surived a full week of my family. One apartment, 5 people. Thankfully we have 2 bathrooms! Things went well for the most part--only a minor breakdown by my mom the night before they left. But things are good. My brother made it from Montana. He is one stinky kid, sad to say. Family drama aside, let's talk about my incredible Thanksgiving Dinner. It was...incredible! We had a ton of food for just the 5 of us: stuffing, creamed corn, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, this jello/pretzel thing my family loves, rolls, punch, cranberry sauce, and turkey! Yum!! I used Alton Brown's Roast Turkey recipe, which calls for the turkey to be brined. Everyone was skeptical, but I persisted. It looked pretty gross in the brine--take a look.

Yes, that's a orange-drink or lemon-water only church water cooler I've got it in. Which reminds me, I need to return it...It got stuffed with all sorts of yummy smell-good things and then roasted till perfect.

It looks eensy weensy but it was 14 pounds. The meat was super juicy, not dry at all, which I hate. People wouldn't need gravy if their turkeys weren't dry!

Overall, my first Thanksgiving went off well. I didn't burn anything, and everything came out great. I can't wait to do it again!!

Derrick and I and my parents went out at 4am on Black Friday to go shopping. There were crazy ladies at Kohl's who were trying to strategize with us on how to keep people from cutting in line. It was hilarious. We went to breakfast at Cracker Barrel (YUM!) then went back home to crash. Later that night we went to see The Guardian. Yes, with Ashton Kutcher and Kevin Costner. It's about the Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers---I loved it. Of course, I was crying like a baby at the end. Like always. What is up with the water works lately???

We did the Harley Tour one day. Can you see us a bikers?? Ha. No thanks.

I've got crazy amounts of Tivo waiting now, and all I want to do is park it on the sofa and watch TV till my eyes fall out. I deserve it. I took a test and 2 quizzes today and kicked their butts. Awww yeah.

It's a woman thing

I just ran 5 whole miles. Without stopping. I feel like a machine!!! My second toes hurt though, especially my left one. There is a big blister type thing on the tip of my toe. It's not pus filled or anything, but just skin that's rubbed off the underlying skin. Weird. And ugly.

Yesterday while Evelyn and I were at the mall, we stopped into Bath and Body Works. I wound up over by the makeup (surprise, surprise!) and this lady walked over to the mirror next to me and looked all flustered and frustrated as she checked out the lipstick she just put on. I looked at her, and she looked at me, obviously needing some help. She told me she wasn't sure about the color. She was black, and her skin color and the lipstick just didn't do much for her. So I told her that. I told her it was pretty color, but it kind of washed her out, and that I thougt she needed something with a little more red in it. She agreed with me and we started to look. Well, the "makeup artist" that was working there rushed up and started to get her a new color, but still telling her that the other color looked great on her. Of course she's going to say that--she wants the lady to buy that $25 tube of lipstick! Which is another thing this lady was concerned about. Anyway, she was thanking me for being so honest about the color, and I told her to go 4 stores down and hit up MAC--they have more than 8 colors, and for about half the price. Well, the "makeup artist" obviously was not happy about this little encounter. She still was insisting that both lipsticks looked great on her, but the lady just set everything down and said, "I can't do this today. Bye." She thanked me again, and I walked away, and as I turned back to see the "makeup artist", I saw she was talking to another employee and overheard her telling the other girl what had just happened, and how I lost the sale for them and how I butted in and blah blah blah. I don't really care. I could not stand idly by and let some pushy employee with bad makeup herself sell another woman ugly makeup. I just couldn't! I'll consider that my good deed of the day. :)

I made some yummy white chili tonite. Didn't turn out as thick since I forgot to buy whipping cream and subbed some whole milk I picked up at the gas station. Still tasty tho. Because I love you, I will share the recipe. I got it from my friend Miriam, who may have gotten it from my friend Shannon. I don't know who to credit, but thanks!

Creamy White Chili

1 med. chopped onion
1 1/2 tsp. garlic or 2 cloves
1 T veg. oil

1 tsp salt
1 tsp cumin

Spice variety is the spice of life

I'm sure you were all anxiously awaiting to find out the results of my Pharm test. Well, wait no more! I got a 98! Hip hip...hooray!

Wednesday night I went to a baby shower. Cute games, cute food, cute gifts. And hey, guess what? I was the only one not pregnant or a mom. Which one guest was very kind to point out to the rest of the group, as if I had some sort of horrid disease. Ack!! She has free time!! Oh no!! She still has perky boobs!! Stay away from me, girl with intact flat abs!! EW!! She gets to sleep through the night!! WHATEVER!!!! I'm really thinking of boycotting all baby showers until my own.

My mother in law flew in last night, and while Derrick was at work today we hit the mall. It was so festive and Christmasy and awesome. We shopped all day. Nothing like a little retail therapy to get you in the Christmas mood. I got this incredible olive oil from Oil & Vinegar--it's Pomegranate Olive Oil. YUM!! My MIL got Orange-Lemon-Basil Vinegar which was good too. We combined both and used it on a chopped salad for dinner tonite and it was de-lish.

We went and saw Everybody's Hero tonite at the Dollar Theater. It went to dollar super fast, but I thought it was sooooo cute! 10 minutes into the movie I was already crying! Christopher and Dana Reeve produced it, which I found out about at the end and that made it even more sad! Not that the movie was sad, but I was a freaking wreck. It's a feel-good movie if anything. I thought Derrick would like it b/c it's about baseball, but he wasn't feeling it. Oh well. At least he stayed awake! Miracle of miracles!

I got a burst of energy around 10pm tonite and decided to organize my cabinets. I have an insane number of spices. Like at least 50, no joke. Yeah, some are dupes, but still. That's a truckload of spices. And they take up some crazy space. What's pathetic is that almost half of them still have "kdr" initialed onto the lid. Yes, that means they are more than 3 years old, when I had to brand and hide them from my klepto roommates. I read that spices are really only potent for like 6 months of something like that, so I'm sure most of them are duds. Who can afford to replace their spices every 6 months?? Honestly, people! I also found about 6 pounds of powdered sugar. 3 separate open bags, all with different amounts remaining, on top of the 3 brand new bags. What am I ever going to do with that much powdered sugar?? Something kinky, I'm sure....haha, just kidding. And I threw out a bunch of old food that I know I'll never eat, but now it looks like Old Mother Hubbard lives here. Good thing I'm going grocery shopping tomorrow! I hope I can still find a turkey!! Gobble gobble!

Birthdays!

A Huuuuge Happy Birthday to my hubba-hubs! The big 2-7!! Love you lots! Hope your birthday is awesome! It will be great if I can get the angel food cake out of the pan in one piece. We shall see...
And Happy Birthday to my #2!! Well, maybe #3. I think Tom Brady takes the #2 spot. Could be a tie. Anyway, Josh Duhamel is hooooot. Yes, that's Tad Hamilton. loooove him.

And Happy Birthday to my friend Whitney! I don't have a picture of her, but she's gar-juss. ;)

And may I just say, that I kicked my Pharm's test ARSE today. I'll be extremely shocked if I don't get an A. Of course, since I said that, I won't get one. Still, I feel really good about it. Grades should be up by tonite sometime, so it's only a matter of time before I find out.

Oh, and it's freezing today. Lame.

Monday=poopy

It finally feels like the semester is winding down. After Thanksgiving, which is in a week and a half---YEA!!!, I don't have clinical anymore, and other classes are randomly being cancelled. It's great. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, and it's never been brighter!

I spent most of the weekend studying for my Pharm test tomorrow. I'm not too stressed about it....yet. Material is pretty easy this time around, at least I think so.

We chaperoned the dance on Saturday night. It was interesting, to say the least. There were probably 4 girls for every guy there. And the majority of the guys were from the city branch, which led to quite a mixture of kids. Nobody really danced, they just stood in cirlces on the dance floor and talked. Our first shift of gym duty, which was fun b/c you could hear the music and watch the kids, but then we were on door watch the rest of the time which was less than exciting. At least they had Cheetos, of which I ate more than my fair share. Oinker.

I think I scratched my left eyeball somehow b/c it is KILLING me. Top that off with the fact that I'm missing an entire box of my left contacts and the one I've been using is months old and our insurance won't cover another box (that in itself is another looong story) and you have me wearing my sexy specs for a few days. I've had these glasses for years, and they are crooked, despite many attempts at bending the frames to make them fit straight. Maybe if I just cock my head to the side all day nobody will notice. You think?

My little bro is coming for Thanksgiving, after much persuasion. He was being a poopsquirt about it, but I talked him into it, considering I'm not going home for Christmas and he's supposedly going on a mission, who knows when the next time I would see him.

After our test tomorrow, I have to spring into turbo cleaning mode. My MIL comes in on Thursday night and her room is less than livable right now. OK, fine. It's a disaster. Then she leaves on Monday morning and my parents come in Monday night. My mom, the ever observant, will notice if things aren't clean or put away. So, I have much to do.

Saturday night I had a pumpkin bake-fest. I made pumpkin cranberry bread, pumpkin dip, and pumpkin butter. Baking this bread is just proof once again that I'm not a baker. I mean, it's good, but honestly, it tastes just like every other loaf of quick bread I've ever made. Lemon-poppy seed bread, strawberry bread, applesauce bread, pumpkin bread--they all taste the same. What's the deal???? At least the dip and butter give it a different flavor. It's so sad, really, b/c I love to bake. But I can't make a decent chocolate chip cookie to save my life. And there are so many cute and yummy holiday cookies and cakes that I'm dying to make, but I know they'll go uneaten and wasted sitting on my microwave until I throw them away. I think I like the process of making it rather than eating it. Who knows.

Derrick suggested that I make a list for Santa. I hate making Christmas lists, b/c I think it defeats the purpose of being surprised on Christmas morning. I guess the surprise would be whether or not he actually read the list. I mean, if I tell him exactly what I want, I might as well go out and buy it myself, and get it sooner. It's all the same money, anyway. So, this year, I'm going to make a list so huge that I know I'll never get everything on it, and I guess the surprise will be what he decided to get. So, onto the list, in no particular order, except the order they come to mind, which may be a hint as to their importance to me. You be the judge.

I think I've procrastinated studying long enough. Time to go face Monday. Ugh....

We have new neighbors downstairs. They must cook constantly, b/c our lobby always smells like food. It smells like a cheap Mexican dive where you order tacos from a little window by number, b/c that's what they understand. They come wrapped in Reynold's Wrap on a paper plate, but it's the best Mexican food you've ever had. Anyway, Derrick says they're Indian. He gets hungry every time we leave our apartment. I personally, hate smelling like food. I'd rather smell like, oh, I don't know, perfume or clean linens or something like that.

I studied a lot today. I'm very proud of myself. Of course, I still have tons left to study for, but I'm hoping to finish up tomorrow. And then I can relax the rest of the weekend. Hooray!

Tomorrow night we are chaperoning for a youth dance. I think it will be fun, as well as funny to see the kids dancing and interacting with each other. It doesn't feel like that long ago that I was going to those dances. Can you picture me shakin' my thang out on the dancefloor as a 12-year-old girl? Well, you shouldn't be. I was a complete wallflower back then. There was no way you were getting me out there. If a boy asked me, I would dance. And it would be the stiff awkward back and forth swaying people still make fun of. It wasn't until college that I came out of my shell. Then I couldn't stop shakin' it. I still can't!

So, it's official. We're going to The Price Is Right! We switched our plane tickets last night. We're going to the Jan. 2nd taping. I really really really really really really really hope I get called to "come on down!!" That would seriously be a high point in my life. You know, right below getting married and all that jazz. ;) So now it's time to start researching the MSRP on all sorts of stuff. Centrum Silver, toasters, spas, boats.....

A little bit of this, a little bit of that....

You know, I'm typically a very laid back person. It takes quite a bit to get me riled up. Usually I just let stuff roll off my back. But lately I've become a very wound up person. Why is this? I'll tell you why. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. More specifically, the College of Nursing. In a nutshell, they suck. The professors are rude, insensitive, and pretty much complete idiots. The whole college is disorganized and inefficient. Today, in class, my teacher called me out, by name, because I rolled my eyes to her lame-ass excuse of a review question and asked if I had a question. WTF? So of course, I responded that I thought her question was crap, and if she taught us correctly, we would all know the answer. She then, under her breath, said, "Well, let's be professional and just move on." Puh-lease. Ugh. I'm soooo ready to be done with this semester. With this whole school. You know, if you go to the cheapest school in town, you get what you pay for. Not to say I'm not grateful for the education I'm getting, because I am. I love learning about being a nurse, and doing nursey things, I just don't enjoy the process I'm going through to do so. I know I need to work on it and have a better attitude, or else I'll be miserable. And that's not good, is it?

Ok, so I was watching Desperate Housewives from this past Sunday while typing this, and I'm totally crying! What a baby! Sheesh. Who even watches this show anymore? Probably just me. It sucks, but it's like a train wreck. I can't stop watching it! I'm too invested. Same with Laguna Beach. This season is terrible but can I stop watching? Noooooo.

So listen to our night last night. At 3:15am, our doorbell rings. Repeatedly. Like, solid ringing for a minute. Then it would stop for a few seconds, then start again. I was freaked out. I wasn't about to go down and answer the door at 315am! We decided to open our bedroom window and yell down. So Derrick yelled down, "Can I help you?" but we got no answer. By this time the ringing had stopped. He asked again but still got no answer. So we closed the window. And then the ringing started again. By this time I'm wide awake and getting really mad that it's 315 and I have to wake up at 530. We finally see this drunk guy holidng a glass walk by to the other entrance yelling and being an ass. Who knows why he was ringing our doorbell. So, we go back to sleep, and just as I was falling asleep, I hear a bunch of drunk guys yelling outside for like 5 minutes. Then, like an hour later we hear more people talking and this girls heels clacking across the pavement. Now I'm super pissed b/c I realize my alarm is going off in 20 minutes, and I feel like I haven't even gone to sleep all night. Needless to say, today I was exhausted.

So, I feel like I was the last to know about Britney and Kevin yesterday. I didn't find out until about 7 pm, in the car on the radio, coming back from voting. I was shocked! I promptly hit up Dlisted.com, my go-to source for celebrity gossip. It was, indeed, true. I was ecstatic. She is way better off without K-Fed. It's good to know her prenup is "ironclad", b/c he doesn't deserve a penny of what she has earned. There is rumor that it's just a scare tactic to get K-Fed to shape up. I really hope that's not the case. Of course, Britney will never rise up to be the pop princess she once was, but I do hope she cleans up her image and starts putting out some more music. It'll never be the same, especially now that she has 2 kidlets. I just really wish Oops Britney would come back. She was my favorite. So hot.

Here's some exciting news. We're going to a taping of The Price is Right over Christmas in LA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to pee my pants I'm so excited!!! When I found out Bob was retiring, I knew I had to act fast. We've scored tickets to the Jan. 2 taping. Of course, this means we have to reschedule the flights we've already booked, but c'mon! It's TPIR!!!! I HAVE TO SPIN THE BIG WHEEL!!!!!

One more day until the weekend. I think I can, I think I can....

Monday, November 06, 2006

This weekend was a pretty decent one. The weather was nice, and I didn't do a lot of homework. Can't get much better than that this time of year!

Friday we saw The Devil Wears Prada, which was pretty good, but I still like the book better. (Isn't it always that way?) Saturday we slept in then went shopping at the new Bayshore Mall. We hit up Kohl's and got some Christmas shopping out of the way. Talk about being on the ball! The mall is really nice, except it's outdoor. Did I already talk about this? I don't remember. Anyway, it will be nice the 2 months that it's actually warm here. Whoever designed it is an idiot.

I finally got some new running shoes. Hooray!

I love em. Actually, I think my knees love them more. They're pink and comfy and make me look forward to the next time I run. See, shoes are always a motivator for something!

I finally uploaded some pics from Halloween. Somehow I didn't get one of my costume, but it was nothing special. But here's Derrick as nurse. A gay nurse.

It was reeeally gross and reeealy creepy. Obviously, those are my scrubs and they were way too tight. Especially the bottoms. We were thisclose to having wardrobe malfunctin....Ew!

We also watched Nacho Libre yesterday. It was very random, but we were laughing throughout it. Classic Jack Black flick. I liked the music in it though. Beck did a lot of it, which didn't really surprise me.

Well, I should squeeze in some studying before class. Happy Monday! Oh, and don't forget to vote tomorrow! You have the right to do so, and you should exercise that right. I don't care what you vote, what your opinion is, so long as you have one and put it in action. I shouldn't say I don't care what you vote, b/c obviously I would want everyone to vote the same as me so we win. And by we I mean those that are willing to preserve the functional unit of the family and marriage, which is between a man and a wife. I wasn't going to get political, but there you go.

So vote!

Happy go lucky!

I'm feeling completely stress-free today, which I haven't felt in a loooooong time! I woke up today (nice and late) and plopped down on the sofa and proceeded to watch hours upon hours of shows that have been waiting for me for weeks. It was faaaaabulous. Of course, I started to feel a little bit guilty so I cleaned our apartment. All in all, a very productive day. :)

I wound up getting a 96% on my Adult exam that I took Monday. Awesome. Now I'm just waiting to see what I got on the Patho exam I took yesterday. If I'm not studying for one test, I'm waiting to see how I did on another. But, now I don't have another test until the 14th, and then that's it until after Thanksgiving. Hooray!

Last night I had my slow-cooker class. It was soooo much better than my pasta class, but still very odd and unorganized. There were a few girls around my age that formed a group and worked on a recipe. It was pretty fun talking to them, and laughing at our instructor who constantly said "you know what I mean?" or "you know what I'm sayin'". It was pretty annoying, and she was quite an eclectic person. Still, the recipes we made were actually pretty decent, and I'll probably make them again sometime. I got a call the other day saying they opened up another sushi class, so I'm going to that, which I'm super excited about.

I'm running 3 miles now, aren't you impressed? Never in my life would I have imagined that I would voluntarily run more than one mile for fun.

I'm watching Oprah right now, (which I don't usually do), and it's about Jessica Coleman who hid her pregnancy from everyone and then stabbed her baby. She's televised from prison, and Oprah is being a complete bitch to her. As if I'm sure she doesn't feel badly enough about what happened, Oprah is being so condescending and unbelieving as to her story. Turbo bitch. Seriously. She is not all-knowing, even though she thinks she is. I'm super pissed off now. But can I change the channel? No. I'm hoping that Jessica will grow the balls and tell Oprah to shut her cake hole.

We're going to see The Devil Wears Prada tonite. I've been waiting to see this forever!! I hope it's as good as I'm expecting it to be!!

Happy Friday!
