Soup

What I knew would happen, happened. The one and only Halloween party I knew of that was in the works fell through. But don't worry, I picked it up.

Come one, come all, to a Soup Night this Friday the 2nd at 6:00 PM at my place. If you know where I live, and are within driving distance, you are invited to come. Dress up. Bring soup. Amy, Josie, Emily, this includes you too.

If nobody shows up, at least I can say I went to a party, even if they only people there were Derrick and I.

COME EAT SOUP!

Happy Halloweenie!

Happy Halloween, everybody! It doesn't feel like Halloween to me today, tho. It's so sad. I wore all blue scrubs all day. I didn't eat a SINGLE piece of candy. It's weird, too, b/c there was candy ALL OVER the unit today, and TONS of decorations and Halloweenish type things. But I'm just not feeling it in my heart of halloween hearts. I even watched part of The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown last night and painted my fingernails black. Now I'm watching the 7th Heaven Halloween special. I'm so pathetic. However, the Great Pumpkin did come to our house and dye our milk orange! Here are a few Halloween jokes for your spooking pleasure:

And because I have some sort of fascination with Google and their holiday logos:

Today was my first day of caring for patients on the mom/baby unit. It was awesome. My baby had sooooo much black hair, and it was soooo soft. Like a duck. Too cute. Poor thing fractured her clavicle on the way out, so we had to pin her arm across her body to her shirt. It was so much easier than I was anticipating, and I loved every minute of it.

Good news: I spoke yesterday with the recruiter who offered me a job, one I really like. I was nervous about letting her know that I needed more time to decide, since I have more interviews schedule this week and next, and she told me not to worry at all. The nurse manager liked me so much, and was so impressed with me that she is willing to wait for me. Isn't that awesome? Takes so much pressure off, knowing that job is FOR SURE mine if I want it, and that they want ME to fill it. I'm a rock star.

Now I'm watching "High School Musical." Really? I hate myself. Actually, I hate everyone else for not inviting me to a party. And by everyone, yes, I mean you.

Sunday, October 28, 2007

For the past couple weeks I have been extremely bummed at the lack of halloween-y type things I have planned. And by lack, I mean zero. Sure, there was the pumpkin party, but that did not include costumes. For a whole year I have thought about what I was going to be this year, and I've been super excited about it. I especially love to see all the little kiddos in their costumes. But have there been any costume parties planned? NO. Now, we are always more than willing to host a party, but the group has gotten pretty big theses days, and our place is not so huge. We don't mind, but apparently others don't like being "cramped at the Callisters." Fine. Understandable. Now, if you own a home and are easily offended, you should probably stop reading now. Back in August when we were in the process of buying a house, I already had the Halloween party planned. Big ole' basement, plenty of room upstairs, I had it all planned out. Well, that fell through, obviously. I was bummed. It seems like we are the only ones left in apartments these days--surely someone with more space would throw something together, right? Wrong. I was getting really despressed about this. Halloween is the best holiday ever, and I wasn't celebrating it! So Friday we went out with some friends for dinner, and then decided to go to a haunted house on the south side. It was decent-scared me plenty, that's for sure. Probably even more scary than the actual house was waiting outside in line, hearing actual gunshots a couple blocks away. Niiiice.

Tonite we had the O'Neill's and the Green's over and we carved pumpkins. It was really fun, I thought, but I'm a dork like that. We listened to Thriller and ate pumpkin-y desserts and roasted pumpkin seeds. Then I made everyone take a million pictures. Sorry, guys!

Getting the gunk out:

Intently carving:
Impressed with his pirate:

Our beautiful pumpkins!

Each pumpkin with its owner:
Wednesday we'll make our traditional dinner in a pumpkin. So even though I won't be dressing up, at least I'll be doing some festive things. And you better believe next year, when we have a house, we'll be throwing a kickass party. Costumes mandatory.

Am I the only one who likes to go to parties? Do social things? I don't really think so. When things are planned, people usually show up. I think it's just the planning of things. Are people lazy? Busy? Who knows. Still, it sorta bugs me. Ok, I'm done ranting.

Yesterday we saw Bee Movie! It was soooooo cute! But then, it was just my kind of movie. Really, it was adorable. Lots of little bee puns. We saw it as part of a sneak peak, and it comes out this weekend. I recommend it, especially if you have kidlets. Too cute.

Thanks to everyone who either emailed me or posted a chocolate chip recipe. I have enough recipes to keep my busy for awhile! I'll be sure to tell you how they turn out! (or don't....)

Jib Jab

I got this idea from Nikki and Spencer's blog. I cannot stop laughing. Probably the funniest thing I have seen in a long, long time.

**WARNING** Magic Spoiler Ahead

I'm sure I'll meet an untimely death by posting this. Perhaps it'll be by a rabbit escaped from a hat sent to chew through my eyeballs. Or maybe strangulation by many colorful silk scarves all tied together. Or maybe I will just be sawed in half. Still, with risk to life and limb hanging over me, by popular demand, I will reveal the secrets behind the Copperfield impregnation illusion. Just remember, you didn't hear it from me!

The set up:

One girl, sitting in a chair, about to "have David's baby," sitting on the right of the stage.

Me, standing in the middle.

Another girl, standing on the left of the stage.

He places a giant greeting-type card in a sealed envelope in the center of the stage, out in front.

David gives me a large pad of paper. You know, the kind that fit on those huge easels, that flip over the top. He stands in front of me, the pad between us, and hands me a marker. On the marker are printed the words, "Please play along." He asks me if I understand, and I nod my head yes. He flips open the cover to the pad, and tells me to write down the name of the baby the girl sitting is going to have. At this point, the crowd has already decided it's going to be a boy. Well, the name "Dick" is already written in black marker on the pad, so I "play along" and uncap the marker, which turns out to be completely dry, and trace over the name and underline it a couple times like it already is. Then he takes the marker from me. The girl standing on the left is told to write down a face card, a number, and a symbol. I see her do this, her page is blank, and she writes a 4 and draws a diamond. I can only assume that her marker says "Draw a 4 of diamonds" or something like that. Well, attention is then turned back to the pregnant girl, who is having an "ultrasound" which is transmitted onto a projection screen above the stage. He has the baby, who can wave and do all sorts of things, hold up a card, all in an ultrasound-ish type picture. Of course, the card is the 4 of diamonds. He then opens the card, which he says will have the name of the baby in it. It says Dick, of course. And everyone thinks I'm a perv. Everyone gasps and claps. I pretend to be shocked. (I'm such a great actress. Shame I was never in drama. However, being a Band Geek AND a Drama Freak would have put me over the edge. I think we all remember how much I struggled with just one extra-curricular activity...)

And that's the trick. So sneaky. But knowing how he did that trick didn't give me any clues as to the rest of the show, which was truly amazing. He made a car appear out of thin air. And he made a dozen people disappear. I just don't understand that stuff. So crazy. Freaks me out. I love magic.

The End. Hopefully not of my life.

The juice is loose

I hate getting up early. Hate, hate, hate it. Ask anyone, especially Derrick or my mother, and they will tell you I AM NOT a morning person. I am currently exhausted, and want to be taking a nap. I will in a few. It doesn't matter if I go to bed at 8pm or 11pm, if I get up at 6:30am, I will be exhausted all day. Like today. And yesterday. I realized today my body cannot function before 8, really before 9, when I poured myself my Frosted Mini Wheats (which, if you are constipated, you should eat, b/c they make you poo instantaneously) and then proceeded to pour orange juice over them. I screamed when I realized it. And it's not like my brain didn't know it was juice. I freaking shook the carton before pouring it. WTF? I drained the juice out of the bowl as quickly as I could and into a glass and poured milk over it, like sane, normal people do. People who can wake up in the morning and be functioning adults. But apparently I was too late, and my mini wheats had tangy orange centers, which just did not mix well. Why didn't I just dump it all out and start over? I don't know. That part of my decision-making brain was obviously not awake yet either.

This is why I think I would make an excellent 3rd shifter.

Copperfield

While we were in Vegas, Sara, Derrick and I saw David Copperfield at MGM. He puts on a weird show, but it was still fun, and I'm ALWAYS amazed and stunned at even the simplest magic tricks. My brother in law dabbles in magic, mostly card and coin tricks, but I'm right there with my little nieces and nephews, our jaws open in wonder. Anyway, at one point in his magic show, he produces a giant jar of dill pickles from a slim briefcase. Then he tosses out a few pickles into the audience. He throws one to me and I catch it. Apparently, this is my ticket on stage to help out with an illusion. Sweeeeet. It's the one where he impregnates a woman, in case you've seen it. Well, it was my job to write the name of the baby on a giant pad of paper, and then David opens up a sealed envelope with a card that has the name I wrote down. Now, I will not spoil the trick, since that ruins the fun, and the fact they expressly forbade me to talk about it with ANYONE (but how would they know, really??) but I think even talking about what happens next is probably against the rules. Well, after the trick, I went to sit back down, and a stagehand pulls me behind a door and tells me that David was impressed with how I handled myself on stage, and wants to personally thank me after the show, and gave me head shot of David that he would sign for me afterwards. So, at the end of the show, we waited around, and two other girls were waiting with me. Some female stagehands pulled up into the same hallway behind a door and pulled out an iPhone. My first thought was "Sweet! He's thanking us with iPhones!" Not so. She showed us a video on it about the Copperfield Islands in the Caribbean. She then talked about how she personally vacations there whenever she wants, and it's 8 private islands and you get to them by jet skis, and it's sooo fabulous. I'm wondering what the point of all this is. She tells us that David was very impressed with how we handled ourselves on stage, and our presence and yadda yadda, and that he wants to meet us personally to thank us, especially since we were "in" on some of the tricks. Before he comes out, we fill out this survey with our names, addresses, favorite colognes, flowers, drinks, etc. She said it was for ideas for future illusions. Then they took our picture individually with a Polaroid. Then David came out and shook our hands and chatted with us for a bit, then he took us picture with each of us on his own digital camera. Then he left and went to meet everyone that was waiting, so Derrick and Sara got to meet him. The stagehands gave us this little booklet on the Islands and showed us the website for it and an email address that they said we could send pictures to, so that we could stay in contact with them should a position open up with the show. After all of this, I'm still somewhat confused as to the point of all of it. So I asked again why all of this. She said he liked us and wanted us to keep in contact so we can work for them in the future. Weird, right? It was all very bizarre. Very, very, bizarre.

For Lara

When my mom makes these, I don't think she measures anything. But she wrote out the recipe she uses, so it should be pretty accurate. I wish I could say I am as pro at making them as she is, but I can't. It was one of my goals for this summer that escaped. The trickiest part, in my opinion, is making the balls. They're not like regular cookie balls, they're different. I can't figure out how to explain it, either. She sorta puts the dough in between her hands, thumbs on top that smooth out the dough, and rotates it while using the bottom fingers to push the dough into the center of the ball underneath. Capish? Clear as mud, I'm sure. Anyway, hers are perfectly round, and she rolls out perfectly round tortillas. Mind are lopsided. With time, grasshopper, with time.

Flour Tortillas

3 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 oz (¼ cup) lard
7-8 oz. warm water

Preheat skillet or griddle. Mix dry ingredients. Add lard and cut in until blended. Make well in flour and add warm water until it makes a soft dough. Knead about 4 minutes until smooth and pliable. Add more flour if sticky. Let rest about 10-30 minutes. Make into 2” balls and roll out. Cook on medium hot skillet or griddle about 1 minute each side. Makes approximately 18-20 6-inch tortillas.

Miracle

He saved the cookies! He always says how he is the baker in the family, and I guess he's right! They are rather tasty!

My friend Samantha posted a picture of her adorable baby wearing an adorable yellow sweater. Yes, I made that sweater for her for her baby shower. I'm so glad it fits her and she actually wears it! Thanks for the picture, Sam!

In other adorable news, a pic of my niece Jessica. She's 15 months, and the only girl with 3 older brothers. Spoiled much?

Today I took the last test that I will ever take at UWM. A glorious feeling.

Ok, time for The Hills! Peace out!

Grrrrrr

It started innocently enough. Family Home Evening. Sang Halloween songs. Watched some conference talks. Treat? Derrick wanted chocolate chip cookies. We didn't have any creamy peanut butter, so we couldn't make his favorite, the kind Whitney makes and I can mildy recreate. So we opt for Nestle Tollhouse. Classic, right? Well, maybe for everyone else, but for some reason I CANNOT MAKE A CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE TO SAVE MY LIFE. They are nice and golden brown, and mushy ooey gooey in the middle. Sick. I gave up. Threw in the towel. Now Derrick, bless his heart, is in the kitchen trying to save them.

Please. I'm begging you. If you have a tried and true classic chocolate chip cookie, give it to me. This area of my life is really taking a hit to my self-esteem. One day my children will request chocolate chip cookies, and we won't always live next to Whitney, and then what will I do? I can't even begin to think.

I'm going to go cry now.

Holy Hill

Yesterday was absolutely beautiful. Bright blue skies, temps in the 70's, certainly unusual weather for mid-October. We decided to take advantage of it and headed up to Holy Hill to look at all the fall colors, which are in full bloom. Of course, we stopped at the apple stand near Holy Hill and picked up some fresh apple cider. Yummmm! There were more yellows than anything else, but even those were beautiful. You can walk through the forest on a trail, with 14 stations depicting Christ and his journey with the cross. Kind of creepy and morbid, but hey, they're Catholic, what do you expect? (Just kidding, folks!)

Inside the forest reminded us of the Sacred Grove.

Wet leaves on pavement.

Sunlight peeking through.

The ski runs. Yes, ski runs. Welcome to the flatland that is Wisconsin, and their delusion that they have ski resorts. Still, very pretty colors in contrast to the green.

I am loving this warm fall. But I hope we aren't enjoying this in return for snow in July....

Mercury Testing

I sent out an email about this, but in case I missed anyone, my environmental health class is offering free mercury testing to anyone who wants it. It just takes a small hair sample. The kits are free, you just have to let me know how many you want and I'll be sure to get it to you. Mercury, found in fish, is known to cause neurological defects in utero as well as in developing children. So if you're curious, here's your chance to find out more!

Done!

I finished Twilight in the wee hours of the night the other night. Of course, now I'm dying to read the next one. Anyone have it that wants to let me borrow it? I could pay you handsomely in baked goods...

Tagged cont.

I forgot. I am now tagging Kaylynn, Chris, Shannon, Sam, Lara and anyone else it behooves.

Belated tag

Thursday is the biggest night on TV. Grey's Anatomy, The Office, ER, Survivor. Am I watching these excellent hours of televised enjoyment? No. Somehow college football has crept over to Friday, and then to Thursday. I've seen an occasional Wednesday game, too. Throw in Sunday and Monday Night Football, and all I've got left is Tuesday. But wait, it's the playoffs, so we get to watch baseball in between. I digress. My point is we're watching football instead of quality TV. I don't mind terribly, as the USF game is on, and at one point in my teenage life I was torn between USF, UF, and BYU. And I marched on their field in high school, so it holds a little place in my stone cold heart. We need two cable boxes. Instead, I blog.

1. Three biggest fears? falling down a flight of stairs, going blind, no Dr. Pepper in heaven

2. When was the last time you danced? yesterday. the cupid shuffle. at my inner city exercise class. work it.

3. Do you creep on stranger's blogs? Regularly

4. If you could go back to be any age for a day, what age would you be and why? 7. No responsibilities, arguing over barbies were the biggest issues you had to deal with, still under the age of accountability...no guilt....

5. Are you a good liar? Too good

6. Do you judge someone when you can tell they've had elective cosmetic surgery? No. But if you can tell, they needed a better surgeon

7. If you have children, what's one thing that you always told yourself you'd never do when you had kids? If you don't have children, what's one thing you tell yourself you'll never do. (Psst! You. Yah, you. The one without kids. Guess what? You'll probably do it.) Let them run around in only a diaper

8. What's something that totally grosses you out? Seeing people kiss. Especially if you see tongue.

9. Do you ever delete forwards without reading them? I skim them. So I can at least tell the person I got it and "read" it. However, if I see any stipulations about sending it on, I delete instantly without another thought.

10. Do you ever lie to get out of obligations? It's been known to happen. But I try to use a partly honest excuse.

11. Consider your body weight and your yearly income at their present states. Would you rather be 200 pounds heavier and $200,000 richer or stay at your present states? Stay at present state. But if I were 200 pounds heavier and $200,000 richer, I could hire a personal trainer and lose it.

12. When was the last time you bought a pair of shoes and what were they? Shoes for Laura's wedding

13. The Olympics. Take them or leave them? Take them. Embrace them. Watch NBC for 16 straight days, emerging only for food.

14. What's your favorite accent? South African, after meeting my South African love Rowan in Vegas

15. What's your favorite scent? Clean sheets

16. Gum or breath mints? Gum, and only green gum. Wintergreen. Blue gum makes me feel icky.

17. If you could look like any celebrity, who would it be? Bridget Moynahan, she's gorgeous. And she scored Tom Brady.

18. If you had the chance of looking like said celebrity in exchange for your thumbs would you do it? No, how would I play BurgerTime without my thumbs?

19. Do you religiously wear sun screen? On my face, yes. When I'm 80 my face will look 40, but the rest of my body will look 100.

20. Do you generally trust people/their motives or doubt people/their motives? Depends on if I know the person. But generally trust. Give them the benefit of the doubt until they screw you over.

21. Would you describe yourself as a complicated person or is what you see what you get? What you see is what you get. My life is an open book. But you already knew that, right?

22. Do you watch what you eat? I try to. I don't always do too well.

23. Do you watch what other people eat? Only if it looks good so I can get the recipe.

24. Do you judge how other people raise their kids? Judge is such a hard word. Let's say I observe and form opinions about what I like and don't like.

25. Do you judge people who dress poorly? No

26. Do you judge people who are homely? No. But that doesn't stop me from giving them an imaginary makeover in my mind.

27. Do you judge people who are overweight? Not usually. Obese? Yes.

28. Your interest in politics: High, Medium-High, Medium, Medium-Low, Low, Obsolete? Medium-Low. It's getting higher though. But it's all so confusing...red, blue, left, right....

29. Favorite song of all time? This is soooo hard. "Sometimes", by Ash. Somehow it can fit any mood I'm in.

30. Acoustic or electric? Electric. Where would the 80s be without it?

31. If you were a hermit, would you shave? Yes. I'm too hairy. It starts to itch.

32. If you could shave your head without your significant other throwing a complete hissy, would you? No. I have a misshapen head. Seriously. The back is flat flat flat.

33. What was your least favorite age? The Ice Age

34. How many times a day do you check your email? Too many to count. Is continuously an option?

35. Are you in a tiff with anyone right now? Probably, I just don't know it yet.

90/10

Today was 90% awesome, 10% not so awesome.

It started out by getting a phone call for 2 job offers within the same organization! I really liked both offers, both units, but one is just sooo far from home. But yay! Official offers!!

The 10%: getting my clinical evaluation and finding out I got a B. Well, 85% B, 15% A. What's up with that? Lame. That just means I have to work extra hard the last 8 weeks, since I'm already probably going to be docked for missing two days while in Phoenix. Oh well.

My mood was instantly lifted with a trip to Wal-Mart and the Dollar Tree with Courtney. She was getting wedding stuff, I was pretty much telling her where to find it.

Then it was lunch at Oakland Trattoria for pizza with our clinical group. I can't believe it's the last day of this clinical. Finally! It was our instructors birthday, so I made sugar cookies. I have cutters in all the letters of the alphabet so I spelled out "Happy Birthday." I should have taken a picture...they were sweet.

At home I had a message from another hospital I interviewed with on Tuesday telling me they want to talk about their opportunities for me!! That was fast! I have two more interviews next week, and then I'll have to start making some decisions! Yikes!

On top of that, my cap and gown arrived today! Hooray!

8 more weeks, 8 more weeks....

Weddings galore

I was remiss in mentioning the super awesome pumpkin party I had here on Saturday. Everyone brought something really yummy made out of pumpkin-we had quite a wide variety of pumpkin-y things! It was awesome! I made pumpkin chili and pumpkin lasagna, which both turned out better than I was expecting. I think this shall be an annual event. Yum!

This is our last week of clinicals in the community. We start on the OB/L&D unit next week, and I'm super excited. Even though I'm kind of starting off on the wrong foot by asking the instructor for 2 days off, and she's not having it, I'm still looking forward to it.

I don't think I mentioned that my old roomie Laura is getting married next month! We're going to Phoenix for Thanksgiving, and that's where she's getting married, so it worked out perfectly that we'll be there for it! I'm super excited to be in her wedding, since she was one of my bridesmaids, too. I got the dress, and now I just need to get it hemmed....since I'm tooooo short.

AND, I just found out that SARA just got engaged!!! They are planning on a May wedding in California. No complaining from me there! She was a bridesmaid of mine, and now I'll be one for her. It's about time that girl got hitched!

Add on Courtney's and Lindsey's wedding in June and October which I'm in, and that's FOUR dresses that will be hanging in my closet. One latte, one red, one pink, and one undecided. So...if anyone needs a dress to borrow, you know where to go!

I'm trying really hard to focus on studying for my midterm next week, but it's so hard. I've officially checked out of school mode.

I can't stop eating candy corn. It doesn't help that they're on every flat surface in our house. Yeesh.

Owie kapowie

I have an issue with my right shoulder. I don't know what's wrong with it, but it hurts. Not all the time, it comes and goes. It hurts to raise it straight in front of me, like to change the radio station in the car, or shift, or shake someone's hand, or scratch my head, or do pretty much anything. It hurts really bad. Today in church, I was complaining to Derrick about it, and he whispers, "Well, say goodbye to your major league pitching career." Cracked me right up. But it's true.

We saw Hairspray Friday night. Loved it. Great show. Hooray for musicals. Watching it I realized I have a secret crush on Zac Efron. All I need now are Lizzie Maguire pj's and I'm all set for a slumber party.

Saturday I saw Harry Potter 5, while the Derrick and friends watch BYU on a laptop. It was good. Dark, scary, and good. Except every time I watch a HP movie, I realize I don't remember what happened in the book. One day I'll read all of them right in a row, and then be a hermit for a day and watch all the movies back to back.

Another week of school, another week of reasons to hate UWM. I'm missing two days of clinical to go to Phoenix and be in a wedding and see my nephew baptized. Apparently these events do not warrant me the opportunity to make up these days. I should have just called from Phoenix saying I was deathly ill. Silly me, trying to take the high road and be honest. Tsk tsk. Well, give me a B. Give me a C. I don't care. Two months and a day until I graduate, and job opportunities are abounding. I'll bend over and show you were you can shove those two days of un-make-up-able clinicals.

Nite!

Scrapblog

Chris told me about this website, ScrapBlog, and I'm already hooked! It's so nifty! And for a scrapbooking-challenged, techie cheapskate like myself, this is perfect! Check it out!

I've only made one page so far, but give me time!

C is for Cheapskate

I feel like my life has been consumed with going to and scheduling interviews. I had three this week, which resulted in two informal offers. I have two more lined up for the coming weeks, which I really hope go well. So far, so good though. It's nice to know I have at least one offer if nothing else comes up. Reassuring.

This past week was mostly spent doing more group work. Lame.

It's gotten cold this week. About 50 dees-grees today. Brr. I think Summer is long since gone. So sad.

I've always been a bargain shopper. Cheap, if you will. I have a hard time paying a lot of money for something I know I can get cheaper somewhere else, or make myself. I realized this even more today while I was at "Dollar Deals". I didn't know this when I went in, but apparently everything is not a dollar, but a buck twenty-five. I had a basket of things, and when I found out it was a quarter more, I put it all back. Can you believe that??? Hey, a quarter's a quarter! So I went to the Dollar Tree, my preferred dollar store, instead. One day I'll be living in a mansion on Newport Beach and I'll still be shopping at the Dollar Store. Embrace it, baby!

This week was so busy, I didn't have any time to catch up on TiVo. I literally have a dozen hours worth to watch. I was supposed to work today, but that got canceled, so now I am catchin' up. The TV gods are looking out for me! Hooray!

I've officially gotten sucked into the Twilight drama. Every single person I know is reading it or has read it, I swear. I'll tell you what though, I'm only 187 pages in and I've already fallen in love with Edward! I wish there were more hours in a day, or more of me, b/c all I want to do is watch TV, read Twilight, or sew. But I can't do them all at the same time! Tragic!

My mother in law and her new "boyfriend" flew in last night to visit us. They left this morning, so essentially they flew in for dinner. It was nice to meet him--he's very nice, super smart, and a handsome man. He's a great catch for her! They are flying around the country, making the rounds and meeting all of the kids. Sounds serious, eh? It was fun to hang out with them, even if it was only for a few hours.

Time to eat candy corn!!! Happy Friday!

I heart Denver

Well, Denver was really fun. We went out for a wedding, but it didn't really feel like it. Oh well.

We started the day with a deliciously greasy breakfast at Waffle House. Grits, hashbrowns covered and smothers, sweet cream waffle, bacons, eggs, toast. What's with the midwest and their lack of quality breakfast joints?

The wedding site was really beautiful, on a cliff overlooking the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. It was really really windy, and my hair did not appreciate that. Nor did the bride's veil, for that matter. There was a lunch reception, and by 2 we were done with the wedding festivities. We drove up to the Air Force Academy and checked out what we civilians could. I love all the boys in uniform. But I still maintain that Coast Guard uniforms are the best of all the services.

We finally made it back to Denver and we headed over to the 16th Street Mall. We walked up to Coors Field, where the streets were swarming with crazed Rockies fans. I was wearing purple, so I fit right in. We checked out the Capitol building, where you are at exactly at one mile above sea level.

Then it was dinnertime. Lara recommended a place called Hacienda Colorado, claiming it has the best Tex-Mex, and I was looking forward to it all trip. It was soooo good! I had a stuffed poblano pepper, stuffed with chicken, cheese, corn salsa, and other great stuff. The tortillas were really good (not as good as my mom's), and the salsa was really good too. Very fresh tasting. It's one of those places where you can watch tortillas being made behind a pane of glass, like it's an exhibition at a zoo or something. Anyway, a big THANK YOU to Lara for a great suggestion!

Now it's back to school. Blah. Interviewed on a rehab floor this morning, which I wasn't super excited about. Old people just aren't my thing. We'll see what else pops up. I have another 2nd interview on Friday, and maybe another one in between, depending on if the nurse manager calls me back. Exciting stuff!

Here's a few pictures from the trip:

One thing I loved while out there was being in the middle of nowhere and seeing millions of stars. Almost no light pollution. It was awesome.

And thanks again to Shannon and Tim for their hospitality! We definitely had a great time catching up with you guys, eating swedish pancakes, and watching conference! You guys are the best!

Rocky Mountain High

So we got in late last night and picked up our rental car. A Prius. Sweeeet. I was super excited to try it out. 50 mpg! Especially nice since we're driving back and forth from Denver to Colorado Springs, or "The Springs" as they call it here. We stayed with Shannon and Tim last night in Parker, which is a way cool little suburb. Their house is beautiful, and we had a great time just chatting away. I saw a Sonic on the way to their house, so it didn't take long before Shannon and I left for a late night snack! So far my Cherry Limeade count is up to 2. They also have Waffle Houses here!! Derrick has never been, and it's been ages since I've been. Hopefully we can hit up a nice greasy breakfast while we're here. Hashbrowns covered and smothered. De-lish.

We left Parker this morning for Colorado Springs to take a cog train up to Pike's Peak. We were supposed to meet the rest of the wedding party, but they failed to let us know they moved up the time, so they took the 10am train and we took the noon train by ourselves. It was still cool, though. There are tons of Aspen trees, which I looove. Plus, they're all this intense shade of yellow, and it's awesome. I don't know why I love Aspens so much. Random. At the top of Pike's Peak they drop you off for about an hour and you can walk around and take pictures and go inside and buy expensive souvenirs. As we got higher and higher it got colder and colder. And it was fa-REEZING at the summit. And ridiculously windy. It was 27 degrees WITHOUT the windchill, so who knows exactly how cold it was. Pretty neat, though.

Then we went to the rehearsal dinner at Tara's sponsor family's house, and had delicious BBQ. Derrick didn't know anyone except for Brian and his parents and siblings, and I only knew Brian. We had met Tara only once before. So, needless to say, it was just us hanging out with ourselves, with the occasional convo with a curious family member.

Now we're just back at our motel room, with its fully equipped kitchen. Seriously, has a full sized fridge, mircowave, toaster, stove, coffee maker, and sink. Too bad we won't be using it! Waffle House is calling our names!!!

Our train

At the summit. You can't tell, but we're shaking from the cold.

Derrick passing out from lack of oxygen.

Derrick and the groom, Brian.

And because I'm just now uploading it, a picture of the peach pie I made a few weeks ago, recipe courtesy of Rose's Kitchen. You can't tell me that's not a good-looking pie!

Being busy sucks.

It means I have no time to blog. I hate it.

My interview went well yesterday. Derrick rehearsed with me the night before which really helped. The recruiter said that she would pass my info along and that I should hear something within two weeks. TWO WEEKS?? I hate waiting.

Good thing I didn't have to wait very long. Two different nurse managers called me this afternoon wanting to meet with me! So I'm meeting with one on Monday, and one on Friday, at two different hospitals, on two very different floors. Talk about a fast turnaround! Thanks to everyone for their well-wishes and prayers and advice!

Britney lost her kids. It was only a matter of time. She deserved it. Still, I can't get enough of her song, "Gimme More." Once a fan, always a fan.

I finally saw Transformers. Lots of action, and Josh Duhamel is, as always, the hotness. Shia LaBouf? Not so much. Funny tho.

I'm hopping aboard the Twilight bandwagon. Jodee lent it to me, and I'm all set to read it on the way to Denver. Everyone says it's great, and I'm ready for an easy read. Let's just not talk about the pile of homework I should be doing...

This just in: There are Sonic's in Denver!!! Bring on the cherry limeades!!!

Traveling is the best.
