We have touch lamps on our nightstands on each side of the bed. These were Derrick's idea, and quite possibly the best one he's had regarding home decor. I love them. He loves them. They look nice and fit in with our bedroom furniture.
For the past couple of months, we will come home to both of our lamps being turned on to the lowest setting. It's not a patterned occurrence--we never know when it will happen. We came home from Phoenix with both of them on the highest setting--3 touches. What sucks about this is that we're paying the electricity for these lamps to be on, and who knows how long they had been on while we were in Phoenix.
So, having enough of this, I called maintenance and told them to come check it out. The maintenance guy just came, luckily I was home to make the bed really quick, and he couldn't find anything wrong. He reset the circuit breakers, but only b/c I suggested it. Dead serious, he asks me if I am open-minded. I knew were this was headed. Totally straight-faced and serious, he tells me it's probably a ghost. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? Later, he realizes a hole in his theory, telling me something grounded needs to touch it (holding up his finger) and says that ghosts aren't grounded, they can't touch things. He seems totally perplexed by this. Um.......
I say, "Well, let's hope it's a friendly ghost!", thank him, and send him out the door.
Really? A ghost? That's the best you can do??
Guess I needed to call an exorcist instead.

Overwhelmed
We're finally home. I'm overwhelmed.
Am I overwhelmed at the mounds of laundry to do? No.
Am I overwhelmed at the fact that I cannot get warm in our apartment? No.
Am I overwhelmed because there is nothing good to eat in the fridge? No.
Am I overwhelmed at the number of assignments I have due in the next two weeks? Maybe.
Am I overwhelmed at the number of shows that have piled up on my Tivo since we have been gone? YES.

One month until Christmas!
I feel like I have spent a lot of time in the Denver airport lately. And here I am again. 3 hour layover, on the way back home. Did I just call Milwaukee "home"? I guess I did. I guess it IS.
The trip was good. Fun. I feel like a cow, I ate so much. I hit up In-n-out, Chick-fil-A, and Sonic once each.
I'm pooooooped, and I have to finish a paper by tomorrow. All I want to do is sleeeeeep.
I need one of those neck pillows.

Black Friday
Ahhhh, Black Friday, the happiest of all shopping days. What is it about Black Friday that is so appealing? I cannot put my finger on it. I started the early morning shopping in high school with my mom. Eventually my dad tagged along, and we made a day out of it, usually getting breakfast when it became a reasonable hour to do so. Today Kohl's opened at 4:00. A little extreme, I think. Eventually, stores will open at midnight, until Black Friday becomes Black Thursday, and turkey dinners are put on hold while women all over are trampling each other at noon for $3.99 DVDs, $200 laptops, and $4.99 pajama pants.
There's something about Black Friday that brings women together, while at the same time tearing them apart. First, there's the camaraderie that we share as we stand in line. It turns into a man's game, where we start comparing who got here the earliest, who's been standing in line the longest, who's spent the most so far. You do spend so much time standing in line that you actually become friends with the ladies around you. In my case, they just start talking to me and I'm just trying to stay awake. The camaraderie ends, however, the second the doors open, then it's every woman for herself. One year my poor dad was nearly crushed by a rather large woman with bounding breasts who proclaimed, "Get outta my way! I'm coming through!" Dad hid behind the doors for his safety. The survivor that he is, he still shops early morning sales with my mom to this day.
I have always shopped early since I started with my mom. I typically do not buy anything. Probably b/c I have no money. But mostly b/c whatever I want is already gone by the time I get there. But there's something about being up at the crack of dawn the day after Thanksgiving that seems to kick off the Christmas season. Last night my sisters in law decided they weren't getting up early, but were going to go shopping at 11am instead. Bummed, I talked Derrick into going to Kohl's at 6:00--not at opening, but still early enough to be a part of the hustle and bustle. It was packed. I found something that my sister in law had wanted for her daughter
-it was the only one left-so I grabbed it and called her and told her I would get it for her. Then I looked for the end of the line. Yikes. It was wrapped around the entire store, and then looped around again. 2 hour wait, they were saying. (BF folklore, I'm sure.) Well, I sure wasn't waiting for 2 hours for one thing. So I hid it behind a stack of clocks and went home to bed. I went back at 10, my item still safely hidden behind the clocks, thinking the line would have died down. Nope. Still back to customer service. Not 2 hours, they say, but only 45 minutes. Still too long for me. Armed with a viable Pick-a-day worth an extra 15% off, I headed to the front of the line. I approached a lady with an armful of stuff and offered her my proposition: Let me stand with you and I'll let you use my coupon. Now, on this day of gluttony and propulsion into further consumer debt, if you are up at the crack of dawn to save a few bucks, don't you think you'd want to save an extra 15% as well? Not this lady. She was concerned about the people around her that had been waiting with her. Wow. When did compassion have a starring role on Black Friday? Then I remembered I was in Little Utah: Gilbert, AZ.
I ditched the gift and told my sister in law to look online.
Then 8 of us headed to Arizona Mills Mall. Gigantic. Lots of deals, lots of sitting on dressing room floors trying to convince my sisters in law that they look good in everything they tried on. For some reason they refuse to believe it. We wouldn't tell you it looked good if it didn't. Do you think we want to be seen with you wearing something ugly and that doesn't fit right? Please. We're thinking of ourselves here, too. :) I scored some awesome deals: dress for $1.97, shirt for $3.99, and Christmas gifts for Derrick.
I'm pretty tired now, and Derrick and my brother in law are downstairs watching last years BYU/Utah game, getting pumped for tomorrow's game. Dorks.
Cheers to you, Black Friday. Until next year.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
5 things I am thankful for:
1) My family
2) My friends
3) My freedom
4) My faith
5) Beautiful weather
We had a beautiful day here in Gilbert, AZ. We ate Thanksgiving dinner outside. Where else can you do that??? The only sad thing about Thanksgiving is that it takes aaaaaaalllllll day to make and 20 minutes to eat. Over in a flash. Guess that's where leftovers come in and save the day.
The rest of the day was spent hanging out and reading Black Friday ads. It feels like midnight, but it's only 8:00. Is 8:00 too early to go to bed???

Puh-hoenicks
Well, we have been here in Phoenix for a full 4 days now. Leaving Milwaukee was sheer craziness. So much to do, so little time to do it in. But somehow we managed. And even with a measly 25 minute layover in Denver, our luggage managed to make it to Phoenix with us. Miracles do happen.
Friday, all day, was spent doing wedding things. The rehearsal was at 11, then lunch at noon, and then we spent from 1 to 5 getting ready. Yes, four hours. A little bit ridiculous. And where is poor Derrick during all of this? Roaming around this behemoth of a church. Seriously, it's gigantic. It's one of those Billy Graham, bible thumping kinds of churches. This place had 5 football fields on it for kids leagues, giant domes for other events, a hill with a tomb on it. Random. Very nice church, just very large. So Derrick explored every inch of it, and then took a nap for a couple hours in the car. We took pictures at 5, then the ceremony was at 7. Reception from 8-11:30. It was good to see Laura, but weird b/c I didn't know her other bridesmaids and I felt like I wasn't really part of it b/c I wasn't around for the pre-wedding festivities and such. Still fun, though.

Saturday we were pooped so we slept in and then David and Tiffany showed us around Scottsdale and Tempe and then we ate at this place called Organ Stop Pizza which has the world's largest Wurlitzer organ. It was amazing. The organist takes requests all night and plays while you eat our pizza. We met the Pearsons and the Calls there and had a good time with the kids and listening to the music. She played some awesome stuff--Star Wars, Snoopy, and our favorite, William Tell Overture. It's a really cool place, especially for music buffs.

Sunday was low-key. Church, nap, dinner, walk, tv. Perfect day.
Today we took a tour of Chase Field, where the Diamondbacks play. It was pretty cool. We got to go in the visitors locker room and sit in the dugout and walk along the track on the field. The guys were loving it.

After the tour we met Carl and Jen for lunch at the Heart Attack Grill. I heard about this place during one of my classes, where nurses all over the place were in outrage about the image it was portraying. It's a burger joint where the waitresses are sexy nurses, the burgers are called "single bypass", "double bypass", etc., and cigarettes and beer are on the menu. I thought it was pretty funny. People in class were getting upset about it, and I was just laughing. So we went. The burgers were disgusting, but they sold Coke in glass bottles, so that was cool. The restaurant is an old Carl's Jr. which they modified and put windows all around so you can see the girls from the street. If you eat a triple bypass a nurse will wheel you to your car in a wheelchair. Ha.
The rest of the day was pretty uneventful. I worked on some homework. Watched more TV. The Bachelor finale was LAME-O. Tomorrow we are headed to Glendale to tour yet another stadium, this time the Cardinals' stadium. I'm in sports overload.

Not the best picture, but you can see the organ in the middle, and then through the windows on either side are the pipes. And David closing his eyes.

$$$$
I have been running around the past few days like a chicken with my head cut off. It's insane. I'm depriving myself of sleep right now so I can blog for a few minutes.
Big news for me: I GOT A JOB!!!! Hooray! Finally! I accepted a position at a hospital here in Milwaukee (I'm not saying where....what if there are crazy stalkers out there? Or HR people???? However, feel free to ask me and I will tell you.) What kind of nurse am I going to be, you ask?? A postpartum nurse!!! YES! On a mom/baby floor, just like what I've been wanting. I knew if I held out long enough, something good would pop up. Not to toot my own horn (ok, maybe I am) but I got offered a position at every single interview I went to. Definitely some divine intervention, there! I feel really blessed to have had so many options. Some people I know have not been so lucky! So I can finally put that out of my mind. I go in for all my new hire paperwork and physical on the 30th. Yay! I got the offer yesterday, and the same day had to go to a nursing conference and entered a drawing and won a gift card to Qdoba!! What a day! Of course, we used them that night to celebrate. :)
Today is Derrick's birthday! The big 2-8! Wowza! I got him some pimp new clothes and a sweet new winter coat. I made him breakfast and his favorite dinner and angel food cake just how he likes it. Birthdays are the best. I feel like today was a lame one for him, but I guess that's what you get when you have to work all day and then pack all night.
I'm seriously looking forward to 10 days of sun in Phoenix. Too bad I'll be spending most of the time writing ridiculous papers. Boo.
Happy Hump Day!

Chi-town
Mini trips are seriously the best ever. We just got back from Chicago for the weekend, where we met up with some friends from LA. It worked out well that they were coming, b/c we were planning on celebrating Derrick's birthday down there anyway. Now we're back home, and that means school and work tomorrow. Boo.
We met up on Friday and had some amazing sushi at a place called Marai. It's always nice to go with other people who are NOT allergic to shellfish b/c I get to try new things. We also had a lot of nigiri, which we don't usually get b/c it's just too much fish and too much to chew through, but at this place, it was like buttah--melted in your mouth. Yum. A whole new outlook on nigiri.
Saturday we woke up late and hit the gym in the hotel. We had breakfast in the hotel, which is sooooo good! Case in point: I had waffles with caramel bananas and cinnamon gelato. Doesn't that just sound delicious? Then we just walked around the city and shopped, but didn't buy anything. The city was packed-everyone out Christmas shopping already. I love that kind of scene-lots of people-watching, Christmas decorations, crisp weather. We were hungry again after walking around so much, and we had dinner at Fogo de Chao, a brazilian steakhouse. Again, tasty vittles. I rekindled a romance with Waldorf Salad, which my mom used to make growing up. Apples, raisins, mayo. Sounds gross, but it's not. And I'm not a huge mayo fan. After dinner we saw Jersey Boys! I've been dying to see this for ages! I love Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and we used to listen to the CD at BYU all the time. In fact, Maria used to call it "that oldies CD that I like". So of course, I thought of her during a lot of the songs. It was a great show, with rather colorful language, but it gives the songs new meanings when you see the story that went along with it. If you get the chance, see it.

Another yummy breakfast at the hotel and then we were off. Dropped off our friends at the airport and hit the road. Now I should be working on a paper, but I feel yucky and can't quite get myself to do it yet.
I just found out my cousin was in a terrible accident. He got crushed between a bus and a tractor and is in critical condition. So any prayers you can spare are definitely appreciated.
I heard Tom Brady is being considered as the next Calvin Klein underwear model. Could life get any better???

Tuesday Trivials
Two D-Listed posts worth mentioning.
This article, is about a 2 year old girl in India born with 8 limbs. She truly is an octopus! Very sad. But now she's getting surgery, so that's good. Don't make her mad, she might ink on you.
This article, proves that american kids are idiots. They will do anything for a high, including inhaling the gases of fermented CRAP and PEE. Yes, you heard that right. Kids are collecting sewage and getting high off of it. I'll take a dirty needle in the thigh from a guy named Bones in the back of a bar over poo anyday. Sick.
I've come to two random realizations lately.
#1: I have bionic characteristics. Especially in my hands. And no, that's not an innuendo. My hands can sustain extreme temperatures, especially heat. The hot water that comes out of our tap is practically boiling, and I can wash dishes no problemo. I can touch ultra hot things without burning my fingers. I noticed this most recently when I stirred the pumpkin seeds that were roasting in the oven with my fingertips. I didn't even feel it. I also like really hot showers. Whenever Derrick hops in he always complains that he's getting burned, so I have to turn it down for him. However, like every superhero, I have a weakness. My own Kryptonite to Superman. An Achilles' heel, if you will. What is it? Hot water on my face. Can't stand it. When I wash my face in the shower I have to turn the temp down before I can rinse. I never dunk my head in hot tubs. It's a hard life, being bionic.
#2: I've heard multiple accounts of parents stealing their kids' Halloween candy. That's just shameless, people. Those kids worked hard going door to door to collect that candy, and you just swoop in and cherry pick the best pieces. I'm not saying that I won't sneak candy from my kids, but my kids will never know, because I love Halloween Candy Rejects: Tootsie Rolls, Smarties, Dum Dums. You know, the stuff that's leftover 3 weeks later when all the Snickers, Skittles, M&M's, and Milky Ways are all gone. My kids will love me for not taking their good stuff. They'll probably never even know what's missing! Even better than regular Tootsie Rolls are the Tootsie Fruit Rolls. Even better than those are their distant cousin, the hard to find Frooties. I used to buy them in the bulk candy section at Macy's (grocery, not department store) in Provo. Super cheap, too. Tasty little buggers. I'll tell ya, the quickest way to my heart is with a Frootie.

Got myself a letter in the mail today stating that I will be graduating with Honors next month. Awwwww yeah. Represent.

Is it bad that I'm popping peanut M&M's while doing lunges and squats around my living room?

Monday mashup
Not much to blog about these days. Low-key weekend. Had a fun soup night at Miriam's. Saturday and Sunday was Stake Conference, which was good. Had Kohl's interviewees over for dinner last night. As if they guys (and Lindsey) don't already love to talk about work when they get together, having a get together for the express reason to talk about work is enough to make them giddy. They were loving it. Ryan, Kelsi, and I sat in our own little corner and talked about non-Kohl's things, and had our own little fun party.
Daylight Savings blows. It was dark at 5pm. That just ain't right. Supposedly it snowed today. Luckily I didn't see it or I would be in a much more terrible mood.
I had two more interviews on Friday, and one today. I think they went well. I have a 2nd interview set up for this Friday, on a unit I would LOVE, so I really hope that goes well. The benefits are really great, too. I have been amazingly blessed during this whole job hunting process. Before I even started I fasted with the intent of finding jobs. The response was overwhelming! I've had multiple offers, and I've had no trouble scheduling interviews. Now my problem is deciding which offer to take! It's a good problem to have, and I definitely know that my experiences are the direct result of prayer and faith. It's awesome.
It's only 10, but I'm headed to bed. Getting up at 5:45 is dreadful.
Oh, and I should have rephrased the question to the last post. The guess was for the person, not the costume. In case you couldn't tell, yes, it was Whitney. Hilarious. I did wind up buying some wigs for Derrick and I to wear to soup night on Friday. No one else dressed up. But I was Barbie and Derrick was a pirate. Unfortunately, no pictures were taken of these sad, pathetic attempts at costumes. Oh well, there's always next year.
