Here Comes Santa Claus

Generally, I am a fan of all things Christmas, especially Christmas carols. I will admit that there are a few songs I cannot stand, such as "Christmas Shoes" and "Little Drummer Boy". I don't know what it is about the whole pa-rum-pa-pum-pum, but it drives me nuts.

Have you ever listened to the words to "Here Comes Santa Claus"? They start out innocently enough:

Here come Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus,
Right down Santa Claus lane
Vixen and Blitzen and all his reindeer
Pullin' on the reins!
Bells are ringin', children singin',
All is merry and bright,
Hang your stockings and say your prayers,
Because Santa Claus comes tonite!

The next verse is relatively tame, talking about toys for girls and boys and jingling and jangling. But it's the 3rd verse that has me confused:

Here come Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus,
Right down Santa Claus lane
He doesn't care if you're rich or poor, he loves you just the same!
Santa Claus knows we're all God's children,
That makes everything right
So fill your hearts with Christmas cheer,
Because Santa Claus comes tonite!

Santa knows we're all God's children?? And somehow that makes everything right?? Does this even remotely make sense at all?? NO! The answer is NO! I just find it ironic that a song about a fictitious fat man contains a reference to God. Bizarre.

Christmas songs I love: O Holy Night (but who doesn't?), I heard the bells on Christmas day, I want a hippopotamus for Christmas, click this to hear it, and The Nutcracker Suite. And....Derrick surprised me with tickets to see the Nutcracker tonite!!! YAY! Oh, and have you heard Dominick the Donkey?? Hilarious.

I feel bad hating Christmas songs. Like it's a sin or something. Someone please tell me I'm not the only one who hates some Christmas songs.

there are some Christmas songs i don't care for much either. actually, i have my favorites and with the help of iTunes, those are the ones i listen to over and over. i do like Drummer Boy for some reason - perhaps only when Josh Groban sings it, though.

congrats on becoming a nurse!

Don't even get me started on little drummer boy...just when I thought it couldn't get any worse they pull out the Kenny Rodgers version! Ah!!! Oh and I LOVE LOVE LOVE "I want a hippopotamus for Christmas" and I get VERY excited when it comes on the radio and sing along and image that I'm actually coming down the stairs and wal-ahh and hippo hero is standing there! Kudos to Derrick for the tickets! Have a great Christmas!

It's not a sin! Some Christmas songs are just asking to be hated. Like Christmas Shoes, I could not agree more with you on that one.

I'm probably worse than you are, in fact. I dread the day after Thanksgiving as it truly is the signal for radio stations and stores to pump Christmas jams non-stop for an entire month. Nothing sucks the Christmas spirit out of me quicker :)
