A camping we will go!

Two days after we got home from California we went camping. Yes, crazy I know. I mean, who goes camping??? The girls have been asking to go camping though and when my friend Linda asked if we wanted to join them in Devil’s Lake I had a brief moment of weakness and said yes.

So we borrowed their tent (that’s right, we don’t even own a tent big enough for our family), packed up the car, and made the two hour drive to Devil’s Lake, with dark clouds looming all the while.

We get there and head straight to the lake to swim for awhile when it starts to rain. And then it starts to pour. Luckily for us, our tent is already up, thanks to friends who used it the night before (we only came for the second day) and weren’t staying. It lets up enough for us to set up a tarp and unload the car. Now, basically the only thing luring me into this camping trip is the prospect of tinfoil dinners and dutch oven desserts. Well, everything is soaked, including the wood, so that’s out the window. Off to Culver’s we go!

After dinner the S’mores Gods decide to intervene and the rain stops long enough to get a small fire going and we all get a s’more or two. We chat for awhile with the brave ones still out in the mud and muck and then we retire to our tent. And then it rained. And rained. All night long. It made for great white noise to help us all sleep, although by no means was it a great night’s sleep! Summer was up nice and early, (or was it Hannah?), so we went on a walk. I couldn’t keep her entertained for longer than 45 minutes so we headed back to wake up everyone else at 6:30 am.

The Chaplin’s busted out their enormous camping stove and we had a monumental breakfast that more than made up for the night before and it’s depressing non-campy dinner.

SIDE RANT: I love Costco, but I hate when I get addicted to something and then THEY STOP CARRYING IT!!!! This past summer they had this amazing frozen hash brown mix that had bacon and peppers and onions and all you had to do was fry it up for a few minutes and it was so so good. And I would add a couple eggs and scramble them in and top it with some cheese and it was the best breakfast ever. And then it was gone. And I didn’t even know or I would have bought 10 bags. Seriously.

Anyway, we had that for breakfast and some delish pancakes.

After breakfast we were pretty much water logged and tired and even though we thought about taking a hike around the beautiful lake we took another minute and thought about how long our kids would last on said hike (about 30 seconds) and decided to just pack up and go home.

But we had a great time, the girls had a great time, and even though it was the crappiest weather ever to go camping in, it was a lot of fun and we will definitely go camping again. Geesh. I don’t even know who I am anymore. Thanks to the Chaplin’s, Spencer’ s, and Currey’s for a fun trip!
